Gurdaspur, August 22, 2024: The Congress party remains undecided on its candidate for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency. While several prominent figures within the party are potential contenders, party sources hint at a strategic move to field a Hindu candidate, diverging from the Sikh representation traditionally seen in the region. This shift comes in response to the BJP’s selection of a Hindu candidate, contrasting with the Sikh candidates fielded by AAP and Akali Dal.
Significant internal deliberations persist within the party regarding the choice of candidate. Factionalism is apparent, fueled by the presence of key Punjab leaders in this parliamentary constituency. Despite this, the party high command remains cautious, aiming to minimize risks associated with the decision.
Notable leaders in contention include Pratap Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Aruna Chaudhary, Naresh Puri, Barindermeet Pahda, and Anil Vij. However, Pratap Singh Bajwa’s withdrawal from central politics leaves a leadership vacuum, with no comparable figure in Punjab. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa’s responsibilities in Rajasthan may limit his candidacy, while Aruna Chaudhary’s non-reserved seat status poses a challenge.
Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa emerges as a potential candidate, though his primary focus remains on Punjab politics. Barindermeet Singh pahra, a second-term MLA and district president, expresses readiness for a central role. Punjab Congress Treasurer Amit Vij and senior leader Naresh Puri also await party directives.
Internal factionalism intensifies, notably between the Pratap Bajwa and Randhawa factions, further complicated by the influence of Punjab President Raja Waring. Despite this, the party high command leans towards accommodating senior leadership voices in decision-making.
Pratap Singh Bajwa advocates for a Hindu candidate, aiming to counterbalance the Sikh representation fielded by other parties. This strategic move seeks to diversify the candidate pool, with Naresh Puri and Amit Vij identified as potential Hindu faces.
Meanwhile, Raja Waring favors Barindermeet Singh Pahra as a strong contender. However, the party leadership proceeds cautiously, considering multiple factors, including the possibility of reintroducing seasoned leaders into the fray.
In light of these deliberations, the Congress party remains committed to announcing the Gurdaspur ticket promptly. However, the party aims to navigate the electoral landscape prudently, ensuring a balanced representation reflective of the region’s diversity.
